How is TSW? I was interested in it but never followed up.
It’s pretty good. I mean, it’s a moderate-sized MMO, with all the normal annoyances that brings, but it’s generally well done and fun. The skill system is neat, since it means you can alter how you play on a whim, and the limitation of 7 active/7 passive skills equipped is less limiting than it might first seem (especially with being able to swap these out on the fly.) But at the end of the day, you’re just mashing buttons until mobs fall over and completing quests until you get bored.
It’s the setting that really either sells it or not depending on what you personally like. It’s a modern horror/conspiracy theory setting, with nods to Lovecraft (obviously) but also to Stephen King, John Carpenter, Alfred Hitchcock, etc Most missions are by-the-numbers, but there are enough interesting investigation/puzzle solving/stealth missions that there’s usually something to look forward to.
The investigation missions are what I personally love. By now, most of them have spoilers available on Google if you just want to rush through them, but taking the time to figure out that (for example) a given phrase is actually an oblique reference to a biblical passage that you’ll need to read for a passcode, or guessing a NPC’s computer password based on things they might mention in passing in completely unrelated conversation can be incredibly rewarding.
