As shitty as the news of the latest earthquake in Christchurch is, I still think it’s hilarious that my coworker Sam has been on holiday in Christchurch during both of the last two earthquakes.
He would have flown back to Auckland yesterday, but was delayed by volcanic ash from the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle eruption.

Oh dear, it appears that in the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake, wolves have migrated into suburban Christchurch to start scavenging from rubbish and small children.

Bloody hell, this is massive. I was indirectly involved in setting up offices around the country to manage the census-we’re talking over half a year’s work and a couple of hundred offices. Now we’ll need to shut down all of them.
The next census isn’t scheduled until 2016.
It’s still hard to understand the scale of what happened in Christchurch on Tuesday. Some of the massive buildings that came down in the central city are going to take weeks to clear.
Even so, it’s the human impact that can’t be quantified right now. Many people were already suffering from PTSD from living through the previous earthquake in September and the ongoing aftershocks. Now, suddenly, the burden on these poor folks is a thousand times greater.
Noone deserves this.

Seriously, I hated Jennifer Fallon before this because she writes awful, uninteresting fantasy (with every sin of the genre you can name: one-dimensional characters, plodding pacing, terrible dialog, rape-as-lazy-writing, deus ex machina plot resolutions, etc) but now she’s hawking off her story about how lucky was not to be in Christchurch during the earthquake today because her daughter had the flu (an earthquake that killed at least 65 people, probably more, by the way.)
Her asking price? $70. Fuck you Jennifer Fallon, I hope your books get made into a movie by Uwe Boll.
