Season 4 for Star Trek Online released today.  I’ve been in bed most of the day with a cold so I haven’t spent as much time playing as I’d have liked, but I spent a lot of time on the Tribble test server so I knew what I was in for.  I managed to get to level cap with my KDF character last night, so I’ve been trying out the LG ships.
This is a Guramba Siege Destroyer-a more aggressive ship than I’m used to, with an insane Siege Mode ability that both looks awesome (the entire ship rearranges itself and flips back-to-front) and assists in taking out big, slow-moving targets via a charged Javelin disruptor super attack (I’ve already seen crits in excess of 50k on same level targets.)  I’m tempted to get some gameplay video just to show it off.

Forgot to mention, I made Brigadier General on my Klingon-side captain last night in Star Trek Online.  Currently flying a modified Vo’Quv Carrier, which is easily the biggest ship in the game.  For comparison, there’s a Dervish-class fleet escort and a modified Polaris-class recon science vessel.
It’s an interesting ship to fly.  Being able to launch a dozen fighters means that weaker targets don’t even need to be targetted-the fighters will take them out on their own.  The high hit points, high tier consoles (LtC Tac/Eng, Lt & C Sci) and general badassery of red-side ships make it pretty damn impressive in PVE.  Things are a little different in PVP with the AOE damage and CC a player can put out, but it’s still a fair fight one-on-one.  The only real downside is the horrifically slow turn rate.

Trying out the Jupiter uniform variants in Star Trek Online.  They’re just right for “future-y” variants on TNG uniforms.  There’s also an option on Tribble (but not on the live server yet) for a “matte” finish on them, which looks even more fantastic.

I’ve been playing around on Star Trek Online’s Tribble test server tonight to see what all the fuss is with the upcoming changes to ground combat, and all I can say is woah.  They’ve rebalanced most ground combat to be significantly faster and more twitchy, as well as adding a third person over-the-shoulder aiming mode very similar to most FPS games (including the ability to zoom in-as above-and miss your targets by aiming in the wrong direction.)
Sniper rifles and miniguns are both incredibly awesome now.

I didn’t go into work today because I’m ill with a cold of the gasping-and-cough-your-lungs-out variety, so I’m getting some Star Trek Online time in.  I got to Captain on my only red-side character last night, and I’ve been absolutely loving the badassery of the Tor’Khat variant of the Vor’Cha battle cruiser.  It’s the first ship I’ve undocked in and thought “Holy crap, that thing is scary.”
It’s also massive, about the size of a Sovereign-class.

Quite enjoying the “open neck” variants of the standard uniforms.  They’re a bit less stuffy without being completely Casual Friday on the Enterprise-D.

Anyway, here’s what I’m flying at the moment: the U.S.S. Sycorax*, a slightly modified Avenger-class star cruiser.  In the frame for scale reference are a slightly modified Miranda-class light cruiser (top left), a Gallant-class tactical escort (bottom left, probably a retrofit, since it’s equipped with Borg tech from the Gamma Orionis Special Task Force missions) and an Excelsior-class advanced heavy escort (bottom right, the same class of ship as the Enterprise-B.)
* - I’ve tried to keep a consistent pattern for naming ships for each character because I nerd harder than you, so in Baelan’s case I’ve used names from Shakespeare.  Sycorax was the mother of Caliban in The Tempest.

I really need to start taking better pictures of my alts in Star Trek Online.  I’ve sunk so much time into my main that I just forget (even though I have 3 VA1s.)
Anyway, this is a pretty messy shot of my D’Kyr-class science vessel on my Joined Trill Science Officer captain with the Tal’Kyr support shuttle already deployed and the Aegis set visible.  I’ll try and take a few better pics later on, as soon as Im’ done with running through the feature episodes on my main today.

My Star Cruiser, the U.S.S. Sycorax, equipped with the new Aegis shield/impulse/deflector set.  It changes the appearance of your ship quite a bit, outlining most of its edges in pale blue light, as well as changing your impulse exhaust to purple and adding emission effects to the deflector dish and impulse trail (currently the impulse trail graphic is slightly bugged and displays as more intense than it should.)
The stats aren’t bad either.

Hell yes.  My Liberated Borg Tactical Officer hit Captain last night, so here I am trying out my new Tactical Escort, a Vigilant-class.  These things are tiny and only have 50 crew, but they’re the Star Trek Online equivalent of a pre-Burning Crusade Rogue when it comes to damage.  Commander-level Tactical Bridge Officer abilities are insane.

Hi I'm Andre! I'm a cat-obssessed philosophy grad living in Devonport, in Auckland, New Zealand. This blog is not much more than a collection of my interests: bad humour, comics, fantasy, sci fi, gaming, cats, feminism and philosophy.

In particular, I post a lot of screenshots from the games I'm currently playing. If you're interested, here are some of the games I've played (feel free to ask for screenshots of particular games if you can't find them here, I have plenty more saved that I haven't uploaded):

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • The Secret World
  • Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3
  • Dragon Age: Origins & Dragon Age II
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • Guild Wars 2
  • Planetside 2
  • EVE Online
  • Star Trek Online
  • The Witcher & The Witcher 2
  • Rift
  • Dark Souls

One time I went hiking in the Coromandel and took lots of pictures.

Anyway, I'm always up for a chat. Feel free to drop me a line any time.
